There are many things to do in Yokohama, some cost money, some are for free. After you’ve spent enough time in the museums or shopping, you can relax in Yamashita Park and get a good view of the seaside as well.
In 1923 the Great Kantō earthquake ravaged Japan and, just like they did so many times during their history, the Japanese had to rebuild their cities. After the earthquake struck Yokohama as well, the debris that remained after this unfortunate event was then used to build this outstanding seaside park.
Yamashita Park opened for the public in March 1930 and is considered to be the most famous park in Yokohama.
While not too big (less than a km long), the park has enough attractions to keep you camera busy:
- The Hikawa Maru, a Japanese ocean liner built in 1929 for Nippon Yūsen Kabushiki Kaisha (“NYK Line”) now a museum ship.
- The Port Service, an operator of seabuses, excursion and restaurant ships, operating from the park pier. Ship services include scheduled public lines as far as Yokohama Station as well as larger charter ships.
- The Guardian of Water, a Donal Hord sculpture gifted by Yokohama’s sister city San Diego in 1960.
- Yokohama Indian Water Fountain. Donated by the local Indian community to show its gratitude to the Japanese for aiding the Indian survivors after the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake.
- Girl Scout Statue – Dedicated March 18, 1962 on the Fiftieth Anniversary of the founding of the Girl Scouts.
- Statue of the Girl with Red Shoes (Akai Kutsu)
- Monument of the Children’s Song “Seagull Sailor Man”.
- Monument of General Artemio Ricarte – Philippine General, erected in 1972.
The Rose Garden
If you love roses, you’re in for a treat, as the Yamashita Park sports almost 2,000 strains from 160 different species.
The locals aimed to grow roses species that are resistant to pests and weather, so, if you need inspiration for your garden, visit the garden and see which species you like more.
